Kids & FamiliesEach instance of child therapy can look very different depending on the particular concerns, the child’s development, and the family structure. Since a variety of issues can emerge in childhood, it is essential that kids who experience difficulties get assessed and treated by professionals with expertise, in order to ensure their optimal functioning in social, academic, emotional, and family environments.
When kids aren’t ready to address treatment issues verbally, play is usually a valuable component of therapy. I am happy to discuss the topic of play therapy with parents who have questions about this method of treatment.
Parents are always part of a child’s treatment, and the degree of parent involvement depends heavily on the specific needs of the child and family. At times it is helpful to include other family members in therapy sessions. Often consulting with the school can be very effective, but respecting your confidentiality is always my first priority.
I place a high value on thoroughly exploring the concerns that bring a family into treatment, as well as any related issues. Once the concerns are clarified, I help families feel safe and comfortable so that together we can work to relieve stress, improve functioning, and build confidence, closeness, and understanding.
